The 'Thesis Statement'
Presenting a position paper is one of our assignment with Dr. Malachi. Before this I never experienced on how to do the 'position paper' and even knowing what is it. With the help of my tutor, Mr. Florence, I manage to get some information and guidance to do my assignment.
A thesis statement are:-
- tells the reader how you will interpret the significance of the subject matter under discussion.
- is a road map for the paper; in other words, it tells the reader what to expect from the rest of the paper.
- directly answers the question asked of you.
- makes a claim that others might dispute.
- is usually a single sentence somewhere in your first paragraph that presentsyour argument to the reader.
My students and me
'The son of the turtle spirit'
The story begin with a turtle who lived in a pond, he change himself into a human form just to tackle a beautiful maiden he saw upon the window. Once he change his figure into a handsome young man, he come to the maiden's room every nights. Until one day she became pregnant with the turtle baby. When the maiden's mother find out about her daughter situation, she complot with her daughter to discover where is the young man comes from. After they found out about the turtle, the maiden father killed him and throw his bone away. The maiden kept the turtle bone to remind her about him.
Years after, her son has grown up. He didn't get proper love from his grandparents because they still think that he is the son of the turtle spirit after all. Until one day, the boy decided to gain money from a rich man who wanted to bury his father deep in the river where a mud dragon is. The boy who have the ability to swim and dive longer then any human told his mother about it. The mother remember about her husband bone she kept and ask her son to bring it with him to be buried in the river too.
The boy bring along his father's bone and throw it onto the dragon's mouth and hung the bone of the rich man father on the dragon's horn. He rewarded for his work by the rich man whom doesn't know what he did.
The boy gradually change, he became 'quite out of the ordinary' and 'cleverer then anyone else'. Finally in the end of the story, the boy become the Emperor and the rich man son as his minister.
My Journey
Its begin on 2004, when I decided to further my study (PJJ) in UPM. I choose to take TESL as it was my major during my teachers learning. I never thought that I have so much to sacrifice and there are so many things that I have to face in that journey. I have to travel almost 200 km every weeks and another hundreds km to sit for my exam. At the beginning, there are five of us in the class, but now there are only the two of us, sitting for this course in Kota Kinabalu. Thanks to our dedicate tutors, they support and help us a lot every semester and in every steps. There are few things left to get thru with, the 'F' papers and the practical. I pray everyday for the success of the two of us. Everyone has their own experiences and struggles, never said that yours is the worst.
My School
I am teaching in SRK St. James Kudat for nearly six years now. Kudat situated about 200 km from Kota Kinabalu. Its a rural town right at the tips of Borneo. Life as a teacher in this small town isn't so easy, the students in here still struggling just to walk to school every morning. I tried to give the best of me as their teacher, trying to make them experienced what is the meaning of learning and bring them out for a moment from the hard life they have at home as most of them come from broken family, parents without job, living in poverty and even some not knowing their parents. Some of my students work after school, washing dishes, cloths, picking coconuts and even fishing. Can we ever imagine, that there are still a community like this in Malaysia?
Today...
Its only a few weeks before the final exam. It was a relief when Dr. Malachi stated that there will be no final exam for EDU 3234. I am in semester 8 now and experienced a lot to get through my study. There are still a lot to learn and a lot to face.
